How Does the Paragraph Counter Work?

Our paragraph counter scans your pasted text for hard returns (carriage returns or line breaks) indicating a new block of thought. Because Chinese does not use capital letters to visually indicate the start of a new section, formatting with distinct paragraph blocks is essential for readability.

In traditional Chinese formatting, a new paragraph is often indicated by an indentation of exactly two full-width characters (两格). However, on modern web interfaces, separating paragraphs with a full empty line break is the most common standard.

Optimal Paragraph Length for Chinese Texts

While English paragraphs often stretch for 5 to 8 sentences building a complex premise, Chinese digital writing tends to favor much shorter, punchier blocks structure.

  • Web Articles (Baidu SEO / WeChat): The ideal paragraph length is 2 to 3 sentences maximum, or roughly 50 to 100 characters. Anything longer than 3 lines on a mobile screen becomes a "wall of text" and increases bounce rates.
  • Academic Essays: University-level Chinese essays usually feature longer paragraphs ranging from 150 to 300 characters, introducing a clear thesis (论点) and supporting evidence (论据).

Pacing Your Content

If you want to keep readers engaged, use our tool to check your paragraph ratios. Paste your article into the calculator. If you have 1,500 characters but only 3 paragraphs, your text is too dense. You should break it up so that you have roughly 10 to 15 paragraphs for a 1,500-character piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do blank lines count as paragraphs?

No. Our tool strips out empty lines and only counts blocks that actually contain text characters. Pressing "Enter" 5 times will not artificially inflate your paragraph count.

Does indentation matter for the counter?

No. Whether you use the traditional two-character indent or a modern flat-left alignment, the tool reads the invisible line break (`\n`) to calculate the blocks.
