What are the HSK Essay Length Requirements?

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is the official standardized test for Chinese language proficiency. In the higher levels (HSK 4, 5, and 6), the writing section strictly assesses a student's ability to produce a cohesive text within a very specific character limit. Failing to meet this limit will result in immediate deductions.

Writing Section Guidelines by Level

Here are the official requirements for the writing portions of the advanced HSK levels:

  • HSK Level 4: You must write a short passage based on a picture and a given word. The official requirement doesn't mandate a long essay, but standard passing answers consist of roughly 50 to 80 characters per picture prompt.
  • HSK Level 5: You are required to write two short essays. The first is based on given vocabulary, and the second is based on a picture. Each is required to be exactly around 80 characters long. Consistency is crucial here.
  • HSK Level 6: The ultimate test requires you to read a 1,000-character narrative article for 10 minutes, and then rewrite it from memory. Your summary must be approximately 400 characters. You are given a grid paper with 400 squares, and your answer should fill it perfectly without stretching too short or overflowing.

Practicing for the HSK 6 Grid

If you are practicing for the HSK 6 summary section digitally, standard word processors can be deceptive. Our HSK Character Calculator precisely mimics the grid paper logic. When looking at your results above, pay attention to the Total Characters metric. Because punctuation (like periods and commas) takes up a grid space on the real test, you want the 'Total Characters' count to hit roughly 380 to 420 for an optimal score.

Vocabulary vs. Characters (字 vs 词)

A common point of confusion for test takers is the difference between learning 5,000 "words" for HSK 6 versus writing 400 "characters." When the exam dictates writing length, it *always* refers to single visual characters (字). When studying flashcards, you are studying semantic words (词), which are often made of two or more characters.
